The Long Journey

It's the first day of 2013, and I always mark this occasion in the same way.  It's purely personal, but I somehow doubt that I'm alone. I like to believe that what I do on New Year's Day sets the tone for how the rest of my year will be.  My gestures are small:  make sure to go for a run, cook delicious food, listen to great music, read a few chapters of my current book, start a new knitting project.

It's now afternoon: I ran 3 miles this morning, I'm listening to my favorite local radio station, and I cooked some black bean and cheese quesadillas for lunch.  My current book is next to my knitting chair, and after much contemplation, I've decided on my new knitting project.  Ready? It's been all the rage for over a year, and I sort of can't believe I'm going to join the craze, but I'm itching to cast on a long journey project and there's probably no pattern that will take me on a longer journey than .... the Beekeeper's Quilt.

From all that I've read, a nice size quilt will require at least 350 - 400 hexipuffs so I'm thinking that this project will become my in bed and car ride knitting. Each hexipuff is portable which will make knitting one easy to do from anywhere.

I'm completely fine with the idea that this quilt will likely take me all of 2013, but it sure would be nice to knit along with friends. If you're interested in casting on a long journey project and keeping company with fellow knitters, join me here.

I hope you're doing exactly what you want on this very special day!

  1. Better you than me. I couldn't bear all that sewing up. As you say though, it would be a great way to use up the odd skeins of yarn!

  2. I love the look of the quilts but don't have the patience to make one myself. I'd love to live vicariously through yours! Happy New Year!

  3. I've been eyeing the Beekeeper's quilt for some time too. I have the pattern. I've gotten the OK from the boyfriend. But...it's just too much right now. Maybe when we buy a house. I also don't have enough sock yarn lying around to make it a stash buster.

I can't wait to see how yours comes along though! Love your mini skeins - great colors!

  5. Oh lordy...not the hexipuffs, not the hexipuffs. (Not for me anyway) The quilts are incredibly beautiful, but I've not got the knitting stamina for that! How about a "beekeeper's throwpillow?"

  6. I think this is a fantastic long-term project! I really like to have something like this going on amidst all my shorter-term projects. For my knitting right how, it's my Starmore sweater. And my long-term sewing project is also a quilt, designed by Anna Maria Horner and more complex than any I've done before. So while I won't be joining you with this particular pattern, I will be joining you in spirit as I also make a large quilt this year.

  9. My word, that journey will have everything! It will be beautiful.

The biggest project that I have planned for this year is a Colour Affection in laceweight, but I'm not sure if that's a year's worth of knitting, even at my slowish pace.

  11. You've got me motivated to do the Bobble Blanket, I had some more yarn for Christmas so will carry on with it as a long term project. Thank you for another great KAL.
I'm so tempted with the Beekeepers Quilt after listening to Never not Knitting podcast. I'll look forward to seeing your little hexipuffs. Debxxxx

  13. Yay! Knitting hexipuffs is totally addictive and they make the best portable, mindless project. I am still having fun knitting away on my puffs. So glad that you are joining the party!
