Yarn Along #5

I'm taking part in Ginny's Yarn Along.
There was never a time when books were not a part of my children's lives. They were read to in the womb and their first gifts in life were books. Since then (they are both now teenagers), reading is a given ... on vacation, before lights out, whenever we get the chance, really.

I don't know about you, but I'm constantly jotting down new titles when I read book reviews and when books are recommended to me. A few years ago, when looking for books to take on a family vacation, The Hunger Games had just come out. It sounded sort of brutal and scary (remember, my kids were younger then), but sometimes the most riveting stories include danger and we all know that good versus evil is an age-old theme.

Well, my kids devoured this book and the two sequels as soon as they were published. With the film about to be released later this month, I thought I'd see what all the fuss is about.  Miranda is adamant that I come clean in this post -- I'm listening to The Hunger Games as an audiobook.  She's a little put out that I'm not physically reading it but a girl's got to knit, too, right?

I'm very happy to say that I've cast on a new top-down cardigan and it's coming along nicely. The yarn is Berocco Vintage in a dark teal (I can't seem to photograph it without it looking purely blue) and so far it's eaten up three skeins. Since I needed to regain my confidence, I've chosen not to stripe the cardigan -- seriously, I don't need anything complicated right now -- and I'm almost done with the body.

No set-in sleeves, this raglan method is a welcome relief. We're having gorgeous spring weather so this cardigan is going to be perfect!

  1. It looks like it's coming on really well. Sometimes we all just need something simple to regain our confidence when the knitting knitting gods fail us. ;)

  2. Top-down sweaters are hands down the best. So, simple and they always seem to come out perfectly, at least for me. Everyone keeps on telling me I have to try Vintage, that may have to be my next project. Also, are you finding it easy to listen to the Hunger Games recording? I tried but I couldn't stand the reader's voice so I stopped.

  5. I read The Hunger Games over the summer, only because my nephew had to read it as homework and was having a hard time understanding it (English is not his first language). I was surprised that I really enjoyed it!

This new knit is looking lovely!

  7. Perfect color for that pattern! Sometimes a simple top down is jut what everyone needs, thank goodness for brilliant designers. :) I enjoyed the Hunger Games. I often have to listen to audio books while I knit.

  8. That is a gorgeous blue! I had to fav the pattern on Rav and pin it. Mahalo for the rec.
I started reading a bit of The Hunger Games on my Kindle. I have to say I was like WTH? 12 to 18 year olds are out to axe one another out? My husband had read it and said it was more romance than action; he's a man's man of course. So I haven't picked it back up yet. Is it worth it?

  11. Leslie is right. Interesting pattern
    You've made great progress.
Doubt we'll have many days cool enough for a sweater for a few months. In the mid-80s today.

  13. So proud of you tackling a cardigan again. Someday, I hope to knit myself one. I just finished the Hunger Games Trilogy this weekend. Like you, all 4 of my kids had read them, along with my husband, and have been harping on me too also. I loved them! Now I can go to the movie when it comes out, with my family and have a clue what is going on.

  14. Way to go on the cardigan. I can't wait to see the finished piece. I love teal, actually.

And I'm so interested in the hunger games, too. I should do the same, audio books, never thought of that!

  16. I think that's the same blue I used for my cardigan that I just finished. I love vintage and that color is amazing. Anyways, the Hunger Games is so good, I love it! I never really thought about audio books to knit to, but that makes a lot of sense now that I think about it, maybe I'll start.
