My Stash Thanks Me

I've been tied to an academic calendar my whole life from elementary school to my current work at a college which explains what I did over the weekend.  If you live in the northeast like I do, you can smell fall in the air -- the days are getting a wee bit shorter, the evenings are getting a touch bit cooler, and your muscle memory is calling out for back-to-school organization.  It all started with the arrival of this little beauty.

Yes, this yummy skein is Bugga! in the Sharpshooter Leafhopper colorway.  The generous and incredible Cephalopod Yarns ran a charity drive for afghans for Afghans in the spring where knitters could donate a hat and receive a coupon for one skein of Bugga!  You know that I'm always happy to knit for charity so I happily knit and donated a hat, but it was lovely to have the chance to try out Bugga! as I've read about and admired so many projects using this yarn.

When I got this skein in the mail on Friday, my family cheered and then moaned.  "Just where is that skein going to go?  You've completely run out of stash room!" they lamented.  So, I rolled up my (imaginary) sleeves, took my laptop down to my spare room where my yarn stash resides in an old chest of drawers, opened up my stash page on Ravelry, cranked up the newly-released album that my son, Xavier, just finished, and re-organized my stash.

It was three of the best hours I've spent in ages! Not only did I re-discover so many wonderful yarns, but I also got to re-imagine projects that I will knit with all my stash.  Sure, it was a bit embarrassing to see that I have almost 100 skeins of yarn, just sitting patiently waiting to become something.  But instead of feeling daunted by my stash, I felt reinvigorated.  C'mon fall -- I'm ready for you!

  1. I feel the same way! I just had to move (most of) my stash from my parents' house to my apartment at school, and I found several skeins that I had forgotten about. It's like yarn shopping, except you don't have to spend any money!

I love a good stash dive, too! You've got to draw inspiration somewhere, why not in your own basement full of yarn!

  13. I have a whole garbage bag of yarn that I bought yesterday in the trunk of my car. Have NO idea where it is going to go!! It is starting to feel like fall here too (sigh) but it does get us knitters in the mood for fall/winter knitting doesn't it.

  16. Stash reorganization is a great idea! Good for you! I too have been loving the taste of fall we've been getting. I've been selling/knitting/donating more than I've been buying lately and I should combine yarn into fewer bins. I keep telling myself that each weekend, and then I find myself knitting on the patio :)
