WIPs and counting....

It's that time again, when my knitting basket is overflowing with works in progress. Some are closer to becoming finished objects than others.  Some are only just at the seedling stages of becoming what they will be.

This is a glimpse of the four projects I'm working on in what feels like a simultaneous way. How can that be, you ask? Oh, you knitters know how. For those of you who are either new at knitting or are visiting and are not knitters, it's the rare knitter who is so disciplined (or organized) as to only work on one project until completion before casting on a new project. For the rest of us, we knit away happily on a project and then someone shows us a "must knit" pattern and we're goners.

Reading the number of blogs that I do definitely has me queueing projects left, right, and center.  Talking to other knitters, looking at project pages on Ravelry, reading knitting magazines all spark new ideas and new projects for my stash.  But I need to break it down, so to speak, and start finishing these projects or I will start to feel like a WIP hoarder!

So, since I'm participating in blogtoberfest, I thought I'd take the time to share my WIPs slowly over the next few days and force myself to finish them so that I can then post them as FOs.  Good incentive for both blogging and knitting, right?

The fingerless gloves above are my second pair from this pattern.  I wanted to make another pair in a superwash merino and chose this mustardy green from my stash of beloved Mission Falls 136.  I still really love the thumb gusset on this pattern and knitting the digits keeps the project interesting.  Here's the catch though:  by the time I got to the second glove, my interest started to wane and here you have it.  Mitt number two, just before the thumb gusset, languishing in my basket.  But now that I've written about this pair of mitts, I am challenging myself to finish it ... and soon!  Hold me to it, friends!

  1. Definitely time to get some of those finished and off the needles. There are cold hands out there waiting for them! And the weather gets chillier everyday!

  4. They will be so much more useful out of the basket than in it, truly!

I try not to have more than two or three things on the needles at once. I'm sure that somewhere, there is a very elegant simple equation that shows that the more projects one (ok, me) has on the go, the more knitting time each one needs to finish. If not, I should probably write it. Also, at a more practical level, I don't have enough needles or cables to have them resting. My Modern Rib hat is currently waiting for a set of 5mm dpns to arrive so I can do the last 6 rows (sobs with frustration).

I do like having a knit and a crochet project on the go at the same time though, or a fast and a slow project together, or a colour-intensive and a vanilla project together.

  5. Good luck with finishing those mitts. Just think of how warm and cozy they will be when the weather gets colder. I think that part of the fun of what we do is the unlimited possibilities of all those wonderful new projects just waiting to be cast on! But finishing a few here and there is pretty darn fun, too!

  6. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Rhinebeck was awesome. I hope to carry all the good vibes and fiber fumes with me for a while. Knit on! Love the calico city, she's gorgeous.

  7. Nothing wrong with WIPS! You've got to have a project for your moods!

  8. Oh, you describe it so well! Personally, I share your pain on the fingers. I started a pair of gloves for Eric, and at about the point you stopped, I stalled. Just couldn't work up the enthusiasm to finish them. They were recently secretly donated to the trash can (I know!) because I hated looking at them glaring at me from the WIP basket. If he wants fingered gloves, I'll buy them. Not much encouragement I know, but grit your teeth girl, power through them, and they'll be done!

  9. You have inspired me, now I have a topic for tomorrow! LOL
I do like seeing your basket of WIPs and I must say, I love the hues grouped together. I am working on Coronet, a cute Knitty hat pattern written by a teenager. It moves quickly and it is a mindless pattern.

To goodpurlgonebad, clip those AC Moore coupons and get some multiple sets of frequently used needles. Or, troll eBay for vintage needles.
I bought a number of estate sale collections for short money and scored some really nice flexible plastic ones. I know it sounds revolting, but they warm up in your hands and they are so pliable. The colors are pretty too.
