Sitting on My Hands

Since I made a promise to myself that I would not cast on anything new until I finished my three WIPs, there was only one other thing to do.  I went yarn shopping!  I am truly my own worse enabler (Andi knows of what I speak).

My LYS has been having a winter blahs sale for the last week and yesterday, they added an extra 10% discount to celebrate Leap Day.  I absolutely do not need more yarn, but I love a good sale like the next gal and 30% off is nothing to sneeze at. My friend Polly also needed an extra hank of Misti Alpaca Chunky to finish a beautiful scarf that she's knitting so, you know, I was also doing her a favor by stopping in to pick that up for her.  So what did I get for myself?  Feast your eyes on these:

Madelinetosh DK

I adore Madelinetosh and with the discount, I couldn't resist adding these three skeins to my stash. I was hoping to pick out something lighter (like Calligraphy which is an off-white gray), but there were only two skeins left.  I have so many two skein colors so opted for Duchess instead.  It's gorgeous -- plummy and dark.

Lovely Bridget showed me the new Manos del Uruguay line called Maxima because she knows that I'm a huge fan of Malabrigo worsted.  Maxima is squishy, just like Malabrigo worsted, and comes in the most incredible variegated colors.

Since I always tend to choose dark tones and hues, I pushed myself to pick out something bright and so went with Peach Melba which consists of pinks and oranges.  Once I got these home though I started to have a lot of self-doubt.  Is this too bright?  Too pink?  Too out of my comfort zone?

Peach Melba

I've been thinking about exchanging these for something darker, but I'm going to try and resist that urge.  After all, spring is coming, and I might be pleasantly surprised by how this color works out. Who knows, maybe I'll be converted to brighter hues and embrace a new me!

  1. I would definitly stick with it! I have a tendancy to stick to the same colours too - my Ravelry projects show I use a lot of blue, unless I'm making something for someone else, but I'm making myself a bright red scarf just now and I love it :)

    1. Thanks for the vote to stick with this color. I may be swayed!

  2. I know how you feel. I am definitely not a bright pink person either, but sometimes it is good to get out of our comfort zone.

  4. The same thing happened to me with the Maxima! I was in KnitWit in Portland and saw the hands of yellow and green and it made me think of summer field grasses after you pick up your picnic blanket. I used it to make the "Derry" pullover from New England Knits, but I did not alternate skeins between rows and I got pooling that now makes me think not of grass but of camouflage clothing. I need to frog and make "Spoked" instead, or over dye, but I would hate to do that.
Keep it and make something in an accessory category to spice up your wardrobe.
As for me I have Fiber Camp, two yarn crawls coming up, and my birthday.... I will be breaking the bank in yarn acquisition for sure!

    1. I think you're right about looking for an accessory pattern rather than a cardigan or pullover. I hope you're saving up your pennies NOW!

    1. Yes, a shrug is on my mind, too, for this yarn. Let me know if you end up knitting with Maxima. I'd love to know what you think.

  6. Oh, you lucky girl!! That Madelintosh colour is scrummy! We must have very similar colour likes - I must admit...to...a....very...small...purchase...of some possum yarn...in about the same tone.... ;p

I know exactly what you mean about pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. I made my daughter a jacket in yarn very similar to the Maxima (there was a bit of grey in it too though) and it actually looked very good on her. However, I also have a skein that looks exactly like your maxima sitting in my collection, and I have no idea what I'm going to do with it. A cute hat for one of my nieces is all I can think of! Yarn is not cheap - I say that if you are finding it a shade too far the other way for your comfort, go swap it for something that is different but one that you still love. xx

  7. Keep the pink!!! I totally do the same thing, and end up with nothing but neutrals in my stash. It's good to have a few bright skeins ^_^

  8. For yarn that beautiful, I would have done the same thing. At least you are adding quality yarns to the stash. : )

  9. Ooh, yes please! Both colors are fabulous! What are you thinking about making with the Peach Melba?

I'm trying to step out of my comfort zone, too. I have some orange yarn waiting for a sweater that I'll be casting on in the next couple of weeks.

  10. You know I'm all about color.
    There's so much pink 'round here - gad ! ! !
However, Evelyn, I find knitting that makes my heart sing makes those stitches moving along nicely.
BUT, saying that, it's good to knit outside your comfort zone. The project you pick just for this colorway will be given much consideration. Picking just the right construction and stitch pattern.
    We'll see what happens!

  11. I so want to try Madelintosh and Manos de Uruguay! The colors are lovely! I would definitely hold on to the pink yarn! You're right, spring will change your perspective ;-)

  12. Keep the pink! It's gorgeous, like every Manos yarn. My lys sells that now too and I love the greens and blues. I bet that pink will make something amazing for spring. I don't blame you for buying yarn again, I mean who can resist a good sale. :)

  13. I like that Duchess! Amy Hendrix is coming to my LYS for a color theory talk. I'm excited to meet her.

  15. That Madeline Tosh looks sweet as berries - beautiful! I'd keep the pink/orange Manos - you can always make something to gift if it's not quite you when you're knitting it up.
