From the Heart

I have always felt that the crafting community was one filled with outrageously creative people especially us knitters who turn yarn into the most amazing projects. Over the last couple of years, mainly through the awesomeness of Ravelry, I've also seen this community's humor, humility, and perhaps most of all, generosity and kinship.

Last spring, after a wonderful visit to WEBS, I fell in love with the Shirred Shrug and promptly bought the pattern, yarn, and cast on. It was a quick and satisfying knit and when I posted about it on Project: Stash and on my Ravelry projects page, the designer contacted me with the most flattering request. She asked if she could include my photograph on her pattern page. Miranda and I were thrilled. Since then, I've followed Erika's work and last week saw that her daughter suffered a terrible house fire which has left her needing to re-build her life. Erika let her followers know that she would be selling her Wholehearted Shawl pattern to raise funds to help her daughter out. I jumped.

@Erika Flory

I've gifted this pattern to four dear friends, one of whom gifted it to another. Since then, both Andi and Jody have blogged about this pattern as a giveaway. Head on over and comment for the chance to win.

@Erika Flory

As you know, I'm knitting my stash down over the next couple of months and have decided to include this pattern in my challenge. But I would love to knit this shawl as a KAL with YOU so think about it and comment here to join. This can be a very relaxed KAL but the finish date should coincide with when the money raised from this pattern is over (May 31). To make the KAL even sweeter, I'll be doing a giveaway (details to follow) when all shawls are completed. Please join me! I'll be casting on this weekend.

  1. I'm in!! After you gave it to me yesterday (thanks again!), I couldn't stop thinking about two skeins of handspun I have that would be perfect for this shawl! In fact, I was planning on digging them out today!

    2. Just got out my yarn! And did a big re-organize of the stash at the same time! I ought to really go through it and get it all up on Rav like you did . . .

  2. When I organized my Yarn Stash recently two skeins of yarn popped out as partners. Have been thinking of a project for them.
    Then as wonderful things happen, I was generously gifted the pattern yesterday morning.
    My yarn is caked, Pattern printed, project bag yet to be determined, needles at the ready, gals.

    I love the designer's co/beginning rows technique. Such fun.

    Shall we kal

  4. Such a wonderful idea! I actually didn't know the whole story about the fire and such, how horrible. I don't buy patterns very often but I think I'll buy this one.

  5. Ok, I'll join in, I just cast on (stash bustin with some Cascade Heritage Sock Yarn) and have 4 repeats done already, so easily swayed..... so weak... JK
    Thanks Evelyn, for thinking of me and for supporting someone in a time of need. I will post a blog entry about this tomorrow.....

  6. It's a bit hard to say no when you've already given me the pattern. Thank you again. ;-)

    I shall have to have a dig in my stash to find the right yarn, but as I only have one project on the needles at the moment (socks don't count) this will make a nice relief from lace.

  7. After reading your comment on my post I'm in! I'm off to buy the pattern now....do you think lace weight yarn would be ok with the pattern? I'd love to knit it up using the yarn I posted about this morning but not sure if it'd work well? Either way I'd love to join the knit along!

  8. I really would love to, but life is just too busy right now and I don't have time for another WIP. Good luck though! I hope it's a successful KAL and that she is able to raise the money she needs...I may buy the pattern anyways...for later.
