Yarn Along #13

I'm following Ginny's Yarn Along this week.

There's been a nice response to the Amari Shawl KAL, and Susie at Juniper Moon Farms has graciously agreed to let us keep track of our progress over on her Ravelry Group page so please hop on over and say hi. For now, here's a list of those who are stash diving in the hopes of joining or have already cast on:GeoknitologyKnitLuck, Made in HemPumpkin Spins, Truly Myrtle, Violet White, and Wicked Artsy. (If I missed someone, my apologies).

While the knit along has begun, all are welcome to jump in anytime.  This will likely be the most low-key KAL you've ever participated in: no timeline and no pressure. I just thought it would be nice to have an on-going shawl project where we can watch each other's progress and cheer each other on.  In the end, we'll all have a new shawl to wear or to gift!

I'm thrilled with how the shawl is knitting up. I'm knitting with Manos de Uruguay Silk Blend as part of my stashdown and while it's a DK weight (not worsted as the pattern suggests), I'm getting a great drape on US8 needles. This yarn is gorgeous ... like cuddly kittens ... and I'm happy with the stitch definition.

So what am I reading this week? Wanting a bit of color inspiration to counteract the gray, cloudy days we've been having this week, I started reading an exhibition catalogue of Sonia Delaunay's work that I got to see last year at the Cooper Hewitt in NYC.

I've always loved her drawings and paintings but this exhibit focused on her textiles which were wonderful to see up close and personal. I love this photo from the exhibit:  Wouldn't you like a matching car and coat?

Going through her drawings and swatches has been mind tingling. I especially love how methodically she worked her color combinations and pattern motifs. I'm going to let these notes and drawings marinate in my mind for a while and hope they translate somehow to my needles!

  2. Great color for the shawl. I see so many shawls on Wednesday, I think I may have to tackle a shawl after my stash challenge. There isn't any yarn I'd use for myself in my stash since it was all donated to me by the Linus Project. It is all acrylic yarn that I'm using to make blankets for the LInus Project.

  4. I am knitting mine on size 7 needles with worsted weight, I hope it doesn't turn out too stiff! I didn't want it to turn out really huge either though. So far I love the pattern, its a very easy knit. You should create your own ravelry group and call it the Project: Stash KAL? :] Can't wait to see your final shawl, I'm doing mine in a heathered pink, yarn that I've had for 5 years!

  15. Love the color of your Amari Shawl. The exhibition catalogue looks very interesting. I can see from that last photo how cool it would be to use some of her color combinations as inspiration for your knitting.
