Got Gauge?

If you read around knitting blogs like I do (on a daily basis), you'll come across post after post about how knitters have a love/hate relationship with swatching for gauge. Some knitters won't begin a project without swatching first.  Others never go near it.  While I've been the type who wouldn't go near it, I aspire to be the "Oh, I always swatch first" knitter.  I mentioned before that I'm joining in the Ravi Cardigan KAL over on Ravelry and you should see all the comments about swatching for gauge.  If I ever had any doubt of its importance before, I'm a convert now.

BFL Sport in Bittersweet

I ordered and received my yarn for the project and having not knit with Blue Moon Fiber Arts before, I'm excited to try out a new yarn. The pattern recommends their Socks That Rock yarn but an alternate yarn is their sport weight which, in my size, ended up being a bit more economical. I chose a tonal reddish-brown, and my two skeins arrived within days of my placing the order. The color is a bit duller than I thought it would be, but I'm confident it'll be beautiful knit up.

I caked my yarn over the weekend which was kind of a hoot because the cakes flew off my winder once they passed the halfway point of the skein.  Did I mention that each skein of the Blue Face Leiscester is 661 yards!!  I couldn't put the darn things back on the spool so had to hand-wind the rest.

I got out my needles, cast on, and swatched.  And guess what?  I got gauge!  Woo hoo ... let's hope that really translates into knitting a cardigan that properly fits.  Now I'm just waiting for the first part of the pattern to be released.  Wish me luck!

  1. I usually only gauge when I'm knitting something large and fitted like a sweater or something with lace. But yeah, those kinds of knitters kind of scare me, especially the ones who wash their swatch before casting on. Woah! That Blue Moon Fiber skein looks so, so pretty!

  2. I don't gauge, I know I should but I just don't care too if i'm honest. Having said that I'm planning on casting on a cardigan and I might swatch for that - just to make sure I get gauge. That yarn is so beautiful - i can't wait to see how it knits up into an item. have a knitty tuesday xxx

  3. I have learned the hard way that getting gauge includes soaking and then blocking the swatch. If you read Knitter's Review, you can see what happens to certain fibers once wet. Some stay the same, some shrink. Check it out! I never used to swatch and now I play with the yarn and am eager to see how it behaves.
As for the Ravi KAL, is it too late to join you? The yarn is braeathtaking!

  5. I agree! 661 Yards! Holy cow!

I'm very glad to learn that you're mending your non-swatching ways ;-)

  7. I use a ton of BMFA yarns but haven't tried the BFL yet. Many of their colorways are less intense in other bases than they are in their Socks That Rock base. Good luck with the cardi!

  11. I want to be a dedicated gauger too. I'm heading in that direction....
Your yarn is a lovely colour - LOL about the flying skeins.... the cardy is delightful isn't it? I think your version will be great.

  12. Yay! Knitting gauge seems to play nicer than crochet gauge. That always seems to do transform after you make the swatch...

  13. Do you wash your swatch?
I swatch longer ones like yours now. Altho I think washing is needed. Look at what happened to my seed st beanie :O(. The ribbing relaxed and now it's not as snug.
